Alcatraz Island
Alcatraz Island is a former prison isolated in the middle of the bay surrounded by freezing cold water and strong currents, which made it inescapable. Some of the most notorious criminals and gangsters served time in Alcatraz, the prison was closed in 1963 and there are now tours of the island and prison each day.
Fisherman's Wharf
Fisherman's Wharf is one of San Francisco's most popular tourist spots; home to souvenir shops, seafood places and attractions. Bay Cruises are 90-minute boat tours taking visitors under the Golden Gate Bridge, past Alcatraz, and along the waterfront; there are also alternative routes.
