Sightseeing

New York has some of the best sightseeing opportunities and some of the most famous icons in the world.

Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty was given to America as a gesture of friendship from France in 1886. The statue is one of the most recognised icons of the United States; standing at 151ft tall it represents freedom from oppression and liberty.
The statue stands on Liberty Island and each day there are a limited amount of passes available to enter the monument, the island is also open to visitors without passes. On Ellis Island there is the museum of immigration and is in viewing distance of the Statue of Liberty.

Times Square
Times Square is New York's most famous intersection and one of the iconic symbols of New York attracting over 30 million tourists each year. With theatres, restaurants, great shopping and bars the square is always buzzing with energy, many television shows are broadcast from the square and it's a great place to buy a last minute Broadway ticket. Spending New Year in Times Square should not be missed, thousands of people gather to countdown the New Year and watch the ball drop as the year ends.

Empire State Building
The Empire State Building is now the tallest building in New York City standing at 1453 feet high, it was the first building in the city to have over 100 floors and with 21,000 employees it is the single largest office space after the pentagon. The observation deck on the 86th floor is one of the most popular outdoor observatories in the world receiving over 110 million visitors per year; the deck gives visitors a 360º view over the city.

Chrysler Building
The Chrysler Building stands at 1,047 ft tall, it was briefly the tallest building in New York City back in 1931 but was overtaken by the Empire state building. The design of the building is Art Deco and was the first large scale building to have stainless steel used on the exterior. The crown of the building resembles the radiator grille of a car and is lit at night; there are also gargoyles on the exterior. The building has also appeared in many television shows and films.

Central Park
Central Park is a large public park in the heart of New York City; the park receives around 25 million visitors per year and has featured in many television shows and films. The park is maintained by a non-profit organisation and looks all natural but is almost entirely landscaped with a man made lake.

Within the park there are many other attractions including; The Central Park zoo, there are over 1,400 species of animals in the zoo and it is split into 3 different zones; the Tropic zone recreates a tropical rainforest with towering tree's, riverbanks, caves and a 20 foot waterfall. The zone is home to snakes, crocodiles, lion, bats and colobus monkeys plus many other tropical species. The Polar Zone has both Arctic and Antarctic animals including polar bears, penguins, arctic foxes and puffins. The temperate forest is home to animals from Asia and North America, which include Snow monkeys, red pandas and raccoons, there are also sea lions in central garden. The main aim of the zoo is to help endangered species of animals. Other attractions in Central Park include; the public theatre and rock climbing.
