Today is free for you to discover Kuching at your own pace, perhaps visiting some of the colourful markets, ornate Chinese temples, beautiful mosques, and buildings dating back to the time of the first White Rajah in the city centre.

4. Kuching to Batang Ai:
Journey through rural Sarawak’s beautiful countryside today, passing cocoa plantations and pepper gardens en route. Reaching Serian, enjoy time in the marketplace to gain a real insight into local life before boarding your boat for a trip across the spectacular lake to Batang Ai. The Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort becomes your unique home for the next two nights.

5. Batang Ai:
Travel by longboat along the Ai River as you cross Batang Ai National Park. Accompanied by your local guide, follow one of the nature trails through lush rainforest and picturesque farmland in search of wildlife before arriving at the Delok Longhouse for a late lunch and a taste of Iban hospitality. This afternoon, retrace your journey back to Batang Ai.

6. Batang Ai to Kota Kinabalu:
Drive back through rural Sarawak to Kuching for your flight to the Sabah state capital, Kota Kinabalu, on the north-western tip of Borneo, Kota Kinabalu is known locally as Api Api (‘fire’) after the fireflies that light up local mangrove trees. Reaching this fascinating city, relax at the Magellan Sutera Hotel & Spa, which welcomes you for four nights.

7. Kota Kinabalu:
Take an optional trip on the time-honoured British Vulcan steam locomotive to enjoy some of Borneo’s most stunning scenery. Heading along North Borneo Railway to the agricultural town of Papar, you’ll see paddy fields, rubber plantations and lush rainforests and pass through rural villages and coastal towns. Otherwise, your day is at leisure to explore at your own pace, perhaps taking a boat trip to a nearby coral island where you can relax on a pristine white sand beach (book locally).

8. Kota Kinabalu National Park:
Explore Kota Kinabalu National Park on today’s trip, stopping at Nabalu Village en route. At Poring Hot Springs, take a stroll along a jungle canopy walkway to observe treetop life or follow one of the jungle trails, which offer great rainforest treks, before an afternoon dip in the hot mineral springs.

9. Gaya Island, Kiulu River or Kota Kinabalu:
